Most people have sent a sexy text or steamy photo, so they can empathize.
She obviously means "most people I hang out with have sent a sexy text or steamy photo...." When she writes "sexy text" she is obviously talking about messages akin to the Anthony Weiner/Sydney Leathers conversations which go way beyond flirtation and suggestiveness. It seems to me like both she and Kelly Hunt Smith are projecting their experiences in their world onto the larger population who have far more propriety and/or self-control. And then she suggests that anyone who has sent a "sexy text or steamy photo" would "empathize, meaning they would toy with the idea "hey, maybe I can make a sex tape and make a bunch of money."
Well, it's disturbing that anyone at all considers or follows through on these horrible errors in judgment and gives into gross indecency. I hope she's wrong in her assessment of how "most people" behave and think, I hope I'm right—that's how I'll end this.
I hope so too, Pauli, but I'm not so sure any more. Especially after I read Coming Apart earlier this year.
ReplyDeleteThere is a very large (and growing) segment of the population that is essentially unmoored from morals. And because the educated segment is largely unwilling to "preach what they practice", the problem is going to get worse if anything.
I weep and pray for our Nation and our civilization.
Yeah, I love Murray's admonition to "preach what we practice." The whole "keepin' it real" meme and not wanting to be see as "acting white" has destroyed the chances of many blacks in our culture, and the same type of thing is going on in white culture because of non-judgmentalism.
DeleteI heard a good talk from a smart Catholic guy, teacher at a local Catholic school, who said he runs into parents who don't want to teach their kids the faith and proper behavior by talking about it but "only by a good example". His comeback is "OK, is that how you're going to teach them how to drive? You're not going to say anything, just be an example of good driving habits?? Riiiight."
The sad thing, Pauli, is that those parents are the good ones. At least they are setting good examples, such as they are. And sending their kids to Catholic school. It's not great that they don't preach it, but they're not really the problem.
DeleteThe failure to preach is about failing to preach to the culture in general -- i.e. to those who aren't going to get the message from their parents. That's the problem.
Our culture is sick, and I'm afraid that its incapable of self-healing.
P.S. Dreher and his fanboys/girls add to the problem. They discourage themselves and their few readers from preaching what they practice.
it's getting bad out there, i had a horrible experience yesterday at the mall and kinda don't plan on returning any time soon. I told my husband, "In 20 years there won't BE any malls because none of them will feel safe."
ReplyDeleteTry a movie theater these days, kathleen. Yikes.
DeleteA few "upscale" food and drink movie theaters are springing up around here, tho. Those are much better, and are at least tolerable (for now).
yeah it was in the mall movie theater, at a kids movie. unreal. if you don't feel safe in the middle of the week, in the middle of the DAY, you never will.
ReplyDeletePeople suck.
DeleteI've also seen online sites where the commenters and everyone they know all at least smoke weed. Some of them do harder drugs, a lot of them have at least tried harder drugs. Not directly related to sexual morality, of course, except that being high on drugs can make any inhibitions disappear. One of my husband's co-workers at an Applebee's, for example, got pregnant while she was high, which in turn totally ruined her stripping career. At least she and her husband were married and had their son.
ReplyDelete...proving that getting pregnant, to put it mildly, has a silver lining.
DeleteShe should have gone back to the strip club when she was 9-months pregnant, shot up prostaglandin in the dressing room then gone out on stage, taken off her clothes and delivered a baby right in front of all those dudes. That would have been a show.
. . . . sounds like it's happy hour in Pauli's neighborhood . . .
