Bullfrog!
Ha, ha, just kidding! Seriously, Vanna, let's pull up the Rod Dreher Values Board and show our viewers at home what this week's menu of values choices offers him an opportunity to believe in for a day.
When we last left ex-whatever values pundit Rod Dreher, a beautiful gypsy woman had read his palm and revealed to him he was "a 1950s Catholic Democrat". Good one, Rod! I chuckled at that myself. But let's see what other lily pads our mobile amphibian has visited this week after showing Bishop Sheen the webbing between his hind toes.
Egalitarian populist! That's a leap! And...
Back to 1950s Catholic Democrat, this time wearing a leather jacket, sporting one of those gay Marlon Brando caps, and swinging a motorcycle chain in a desperate effort to win back the conservatives he lost on the first incarnation. But...ribbit!...and leap...and...
Whoa! Is God a new urbanist? I never saw that coming. How about you, Vanna? Never mind, we're off again to...
Who-ho-hoa! Conservative-Liberal-Socialist! Talk about your three-way! And...leap!
9/11 Truther! Can this possibly get any better, Vanna? This guy has more moral-ideological lily pads to live on than Golden Corral has offerings for old folks with diverticulitis.
And...
Well, you knew this was coming, didn't you? Still eating the tadpoles, still bashing the post-1950s Catholics.
Gulp!
UPDATE: One correction, Rod. The archbishop’s first name is “John”.
UPDATE2: It’s John Nienstedt, not William.
Well, I guess that settles it, Bob...er, Rod. Those distracting facts tell us that the Archbishop's name is John, not William. Still, we can always believe everything else you put out there, right?
UPDATE3: Bob enjoys a public moment thinking about the permutations of anal sex:
[NFR: What would non-wanton anal sex look like? What about anal sex with a wonton? -- RD]
UPDATE4: T.O. Meehan puts our frog on the dissecting tray and takes him apart.
Anything but "American" or "Conservative".
ReplyDeleteP.S. The poll group that Dreher landed in voted 69/19 for Obama in 2012. Which fits, considering Dreher's drumbeat that the current situation in Iraq is not Obama's fault but all Bush's fault , invoking Dreher to actually state that he is "ashamed of [his] country for creating the conditions that led to the extinction of Christianity in Iraq".
I think it's also safe to say that Obamacon Wick Allison pretty much owns Dreher at this point which probably accounts for the reverb in the music he makes.
DeleteRod Dreher pivots from 1950s Democrat to...
ReplyDeleteASSHOLE!!!
Wait a minute, he's already one.
So sorry.
Not
Burma-Shave
Regardless of the merits of the argument (and even a broken clock can be right twice a day) — after seeing RD's recent alarmist article, I have to wonder if he truly means what he is saying. Or is this just another pose, something he has "pivoted" to for the sake of web hits? Is he genuinely sincere about sticking to principles, even to the point of it actually costing him personally?
ReplyDeleteWhat exactly will he do when the authorities declare him "hostes humani generis"?
I can't say because I have never been able to tell what RD actually believes behind closed doors. And if I go by what he writes, it often seems confused and contradictory.
But if he is sincere, then he should start counting the cost, beginning with the realization that he, first of all, is going to lose some friends.
What exactly will he do when the authorities declare him "hostes humani generis"?
DeleteWe know the answer to this: he'll cower in the corner and whine. And maybe talk about going "Benedict Option" while not actually doing it because the food would be so pedestrian.
Pikkumatti : "he'll cower in the corner and whine"
DeleteThat may be the case, Pik. I couldn't guess.
I just find it hard to accept RD's admonishments to steel myself for future martyrdom when it seems that later on he starts back-peddling or creating escape hatches for himself.
The bets always get hedged.
In other words, we get lots of lecturing but I just don't get the feeling that there is actual moral "gumption" or "spine" behind it. Therefore, I could never find any reason to take his writing seriously. Even commenting on it feels to me like a waste of time anymore.
As for journalism, his last shred of credibility disintegrated given his shoddy treatment of the recent story from Ireland (to cite one example), which was followed by cavalierly waving it all off.
I wonder if a commenter could construct their own faux NFR/Note From Rod. All you would need is to be able to turn on italics, then you could NFR to your heart's desire.
ReplyDeleteYou mean at TAC? All you'd need to do is use the italics code in the comment, I'd think. That doesn't mean it would get through though.
