Rod Dreher's Blood Eagle

SPOILER ALERT: FANS OF THE HISTORY CHANNEL SERIES "VIKINGS" WHO ARE NOT CURRENT SHOULD STOP READING NOW.

In this Dante post immediately following this Southern Gothic offering showing a paterfamilias reading Dante to his thralls over "filet of drum sautéed in butter, garlic, and fresh marjoram; preserved lemon risotto, green salad and Pommery Champagne", our Working Boy ceaselessly teases his hoped for book on Dante by referring again to his suffering, from which Dante has now saved him.

In a similar way, I am convinced that if I had not suffered as I’ve done, and in the particular way that I have done, these past two years, I never would have been able to understand the Commedia as it should be understood: not as merely an aesthetic object, but as a work of art that knew me better than I knew myself, and could reveal to me truths I needed to put my life back together.

Oddly, Rod has never specifically told us what his suffering consisted of or what he had to endure to finally fight his way through to the triumphal redemption of Pommery Champagne and insalate misto.

Fortunately, readers of EQE have bulldog reporter Keith to inform them, and I have finally run this mystery to the ground.

Horribly, it turns out that Rod Dreher has not only suffered through but survived the blood eagle having been performed on him by persons I have yet to identify, possibly disgruntled family members or local townies, or maybe even Biff from Back to the Future who heard he was back in town.

If you're squeamish about these things, you might want to skip ahead at this point, too.

Basically the blood eagle is like spatchcocking a chicken or turkey, except that it is performed on the opposite side of the torso.

The recipient (the sufferer, Rod Dreher) is alive and conscious at the outset. Cuts are made with a knife parallel to the spine on either side deep enough to expose the ribs, at which point the knife is exchanged for a war axe in order to chop the ribs free from the spine. The ribs are then popped free and spread out and up over each side of the back until they resemble the wings of an eagle in flight. Finally, the lungs are flipped up and forward to lay on the shoulders. Salt may be added, to taste. In the show Vikings, it is said that the recipient who doesn't cry out during the procedure is said to be welcomed into Valhalla, while those who do can never enter. My reporting on whether or not Rod Dreher cried out during his suffering is incomplete (he's a tough guy; I'll bet he didn't), but since Valhalla is probably not on his itinerary anyway I'm assuming it doesn't matter.

Others have suffered before, too, but I don't think anyone in history has suffered the way Rod Dreher has nebulously suffered and lived to tell us about it and tell us about it and tell us about it, a feat that is making me rethink my own suffering from my own vague and unspecified Existential Boo-Boo.

Without a doubt it's the renewed manliness and strength of character Rod gained from enduring and triumphing over his blood eagle which allowed him to create this second order, once removed, passive-aggressive post of concern for another human being, The Sarah Palin Who Might Have Been.

It's really important to closely examine the post's structure in order to fully appreciate the redemptive strength of character Dante has bequeathed Dreher in the shadow of his blood eagle.

This first thing to notice is that Dreher is not authoring the sentiment of the post, his role is only that of Pilateally purelled messenger. The sentiment itself originates with anonymous "reader Richard", a person few rightthinking people online have reason to doubt exists.

But, secondly, the sentiment itself is possibly the purest, most exquisite example of effeminate passive-aggressiveness ever produced by the hand of fey: Oh, what might you have been had you not been so terribly, terribly unfortunate as to have lived it as you?

This sort of formulation is mastery, people. This triumph of the self-diddling, ouroborean will is the sort of fingerprint-free, oblique, warrior manliness that can only come from the keys of a person who has personally endured the suffering I've reported on above and lived to tell about it.

Frankly, in my quest to become a better blogger in the manner of suffering-R-him Rod Dreher, it's pretty obvious I still have a long, long way to go.

Tough Guy, indeed

Way back when, the last time this blog blew up was around the time that Rod Dreher was lecturing all of us how he was afraid of being bullied by the Cool Kids because he wasn't down with SSM.  And it was noted that Sarah Palin agreed with Andrew Sullivan and vice versa that Dreher was a weakling.

Well, as they say, if you want to find out who the bully is, look for the kid who is whining the loudest about being bullied.  Over the last couple of days, Dreher has been running serial drive-by pieces (interleaved with pieces about Pope Francis's tweets) on how Sarah Palin is a blasphemer for her comment that "waterboarding is how we baptize terrorists".  Take that, Sarah Palin -- that'll show you for criticizing Dreher without mentioning his name.

Which is not the reason I posted this -- it is just another topic du jour being drowned by the fire hose that is Dreher's it's-just-a-notebook blog.  But I thought y'all might like the ordnance that Mark Levin sent Dreher's direction (summarized here, with audio link):

"Everybody knows what she meant," Levin said, "everybody knows it was a laugh line." Levin continues, "But Sarah Palin is easy pickins so they pile on.  Tough guy, huh?"

And I know you'll enjoy Dreher's response.  All he's got is name calling, and manipulating comment moderation to get the right response from his trained seals.

Some prudence, please.

You can be "too prudent" in politics, I suppose, and end up as a mushy moderate afraid to offend anyone. But the Conservative Daily people don't have that problem. I had started getting their emails about half a year ago even though I hadn't signed up for them. As a conservative, I agree with most of what they believe in. Their main action item, however, is strategic nonsense, namely the impeachment of Barack Obama. Check that search link; it's pretty much a topic in every email they send me, and I suppose they are proud that they don't let weak-kneed cowards like me talk them into pushing for more reasonable goals such as electing conservatives like Mia Love or fighting Obamacare like the good people at Health Care Compact.

But here's my question. What happens in the off-chance that they succeed at impeachment of President Obama? Basically they would have spent a large amount of political capital to purchase (drum roll...) President Joseph Biden! It would be a slight variation on Marvel's HYDRA villain myth: "cut off one head and three-eighths of a head shall take its place." I also can imagine a cheesy K-tel announcer's voice: "But wait... that's not all. You will also receive a complimentary Vice President Hillary Clinton free of charge!" Yep--all teed up for her 2016 run.

Of course I think that these sort of groups are really just collecting money for vanity causes which they know won't succeed. And they are only one of the groups from which I get crazy emails. It does irritate me that they probably bought my email from a more legitimate source, but I don't want to restrict their freedom of speech or the ability of both mailing list buyers and sellers to engage in commerce. That's why I've posted my thoughts on Conservative Daily here, along with a general warning based on Churchill's wisdom concerning strategy and results. I've become very wary of posers and shysters in the world of the "tea party" and conservatism at large; of course I'm not the first nor the smartest to notice. My other action was to unsubscribe from their emails.

To find the front lines in a war with Fascists, just look for the young men in tan shirts.

So during this break from whatever He Who Shall Not Be Named is posting these days, I have been taking one of those new-fangled “MOOC” courses online from Coursera.  The course I’ve been taking is on World History since 1760, and it has been terrific.  Anyway, the course came around to the topic of fascism, and the good Prof put up a quote from Mussolini describing fascism (emphasis added by me):

Against individualism, the Fascist conception is for the State. And it is for the individual, in so far as he coincides with the State, which is the conscience and universal will of man in his historical existence. It is opposed to classical Liberalism, which arose from the necessity of reacting against absolutism, monarchies for example. And which brought its historical purpose to an end when the State was transformed into the conscience and will of the people. . . .

. . . . Therefore, for the Fascist, everything is in the State, and nothing human or spiritual exists, much less has Value, outside the State.

This business about the State being the conscience and will of the people, without regard for external sources such as the spiritual, especially struck me given some of the attacks on our conscience that we’ve seen lately.   We’re running headlong into fascism, or more accurately, it’s running headlong into us.

It was reported yesterday that the ethics committee of the State Supreme Court of California has unanimously recommended a total ban on state judges volunteering for the Boy Scouts, and that a federal judge in California anonymously(?) says that this ought to be the de facto rule for both state and federal judges, even if not enacted.

(Come on, your honor. If you're on the right side of history, why anonymous?)

One has to take a step back for this to really sink in:  here we have a long-lived organization that has the stated purpose of forming young men of character and virtue, indeed with a list of virtues (unarguable virtues) as their “law”.  Yet here it is proposed, by those in charge of ensuring justice, that it ought to be UNETHICAL for a judge of a court of general jurisdiction to volunteer time toward such an organization.  This is the essence of fascist conscience formation -- never mind what your conscience previously told you (based on external sources), this is your new conscience.

And so we have a culture, backed up and encouraged by the State, acting on a daily basis to form and enforce this new “conscience and will of the people” replacing that of us foolish individuals that may be based on external sources.  Of course, the government doesn’t particularly care what this new conscience actually proscribes (remember Obama’s “evolution” on same-sex marriage), so long as the external sources are marginalized.  And of course our government is all too willing to chime in with their own proclamations of the conscience of the State, by proclaiming that debate is over on such topics as anthropogenic climate change, and government-managed health insurance (which is being implemented in the true Fascist way).  Which is reaching its logical end with the IRS scandal, Hobby Lobby v. Sebelius, and the Little Sisters of the Poor case.  (Why, all the Little Sisters have to do is sign a form -- that’s all we’re asking.  Of course, that’s all that St. Thomas More had to do, and all the Holy Maccabees had to do was eat a piece of pork.)

These are the stakes:  not only our consciences, but the right to even have an individual conscience.  Unfortunately, the battle must be joined.  It’s not a fight we picked, but it has picked us.  It doesn’t matter that the fight will be over small things that will be painted in political terms, because defeat begins with concessions on small things.  Just ask the Boy Scouts how their concession to the gay agenda a couple of years ago has worked out for them -- within the last week we’ve had Disney announce that they will no longer support their employees volunteering time for the Boy Scouts, and now this proposed ethical rule.

Another old timer had something to say about that very thing, long long ago:

For all claims from an equal, urged upon a neighbour as commands before any attempt at legal settlement, be they great or be they small, have only one meaning, and that is slavery.

(Pericles last speech before the outbreak of the Peloponnesian War -- Thucydides, I.139-146.)

And just so --  the BSA is now enslaved.  Capitulating part way not only did them no good -- it harmed them among their friends, and weakened them in front of their enemies who now demand even more.

This is where the battles lie.  We’d best be on the lookout for how we’ll each be challenged.

And no, the "Benedict Option" is not an option.

Open Whining Thread

It's occurred to me that I don't provide enough opportunity for those who envy the victim status gays, liberals and others of similar moral stature get to claim for themselves on an almost daily basis to have their own voices as the unfair victims of meanies heard. Well, this thread is your chance to whine to your heart's content. I'll even start it off myself with a long-overdue wail about my Existential BooBoo, "Owwwww". Now that's the sound of existential victimhood, people. Repite: "Owwwww".

Extra points will be given if you're well over 30 but can still hit that unmistakeable note of petulant snark only a 13-year-old girl can pull off, and extra extra points if you can keep beating your audience over the head with some sort of utterly banal and pointless slogan like "The Law of Toads: You Don't Think You Have Warts - Until I Do!" to the point that it resembles a ruined mackerel disintegrating over everyone and everything. In fact, if I think I can make any internet cred or cheddar off your meme, I might split it with you.

Okay, whiners, diverticulitis has been done, but everything else is wide open.

Oonnhhhhh.
