New Google Search Terms

...are of course Dreher mongoloid. Here are some hits:

Ace of Spades. Excerpt:

Insult, incidentally, Hanson didn't intend, as the professor is obviously quite a bit more highbrow than the blogger Dreher. It is simply a descriptive term, intended to neither slander nor flatter. Dreher obviously considers himself among the cultural vanguard; Hanson is merely attempting to explain to Mr. Sophisticate what it is that his analysis misses; but Mr. Sophisticate needs no instruction on this whatsoever for, while lowbrows obviously need the guidance of highbrows, ultra-accomplished blogger elites like Dreher can learn nothing at all from the lowbrows. Their input unnecessary, as they're fucking retards anyway.

Fucking retards, I mean, in the Ignatian sense, meaning "brain damaged mental defectives."

If there's any insult here, it's to actual highbrows, chagrined to see their cachet diminished by the naming of Dreher as one of their cohort.

Too funny. Read the whole thing. No punches are pulled.

Creative Minority Report. Excerpt:

Ignatian sense? Yeah, ummm?. No. I do not suspect Mr. Dreher of any malice but rather of a deplorable cluelessness especially for a Christian supportive of the culture of life. The use of this term in any context helps no one, least of all Dreher.

To be fair, the post does accomplish its objective. Mr. Dreher used this unfortunate term in his own defense from Victor Davis Hanson 's jab at certain "highbrows." After reading this lamentable post it is quite clear that the term highbrow does not fairly apply to him. Well done, Mr. Dreher.

Meanwhile, Athens & Jerusalem provides an insightful analysis of what's wrong with Confederacy of Dunces and how Dreher's love of the book is probably what got him into trouble. One of the comments links to this review of Crunchy Conservatives which I'm not sure I had seen before.

UPDATE: Midwest Conservative Journal chimes in. Liked this comment from Christopher Hathaway:

Dreher is a great case study of moral obtuseness and intellectual pinheadedness. Responding to a woman’s criticism that it’s disgusting to call one’s opponents idiots while using that term, and claiming the intellectual high ground at the same time, Dreher finds it appropriate to respond thus:

“Clearly, you suffer from a lack of knowledge of geometry and theology.”

Now, if you haven’t read A Confederacy of Dunces lately, or at all (I never managed to stomach past the first chapter) or if you have nothing better to do than to investigate it (guilty), you wouldn’t know that Dreher isn’t being merely incomprehensibly insulting again but that he is (possibly?) referencing (ironically?) the character of Ignatius Reilly who regularly disparages the world this way. Apart from the incredible conceit that references to what is obviously a favorite book of his, obscure though it is to most of the world, should be as clearly understood as Scripture quotes in a Fundamentalist church (I use that term in the Ignatian sense. Ignatius of Antioch, of course) Dreher obviously thinks it sensible to respond to legitimate criticism of his manner of discourse by impersonating the behavior of an unpleasant character from a deliberately loathsome story.

And he’s calling other people idiots.

I think Mr. Hathaway nails it in that Rod kind of wants to be Ignatius Reilly the way my 4-year old wants to be Batman. They both get to beat up "bad guys", except the "Ignatian" way to beat people up is via vituperative language rather than Ninja chops.

Kathy Shaidle's blast at CoD. I love the word treacly. So apro-freaking-pos.

Also, Riehl World View wieghs in briefly.

  1. I would love for Dreher to be associated with the word "jerkwad" as well. ;-)

I mean, the snobbishness of the way he promoted the "Crunchy Con" thing was bad enough. But the whole "Mongoloid Right" thing is just disgusting. It shows his utter contempt for those who are "not one of [his kind]."

BTW, I've never read Confederacy of Dunces. I bought an audiobook version of it because a guy at work swears it is one of the funniest books he's ever read. But others say it's really overrated. It's low on my book-listening priorities, but I suppose I'll get around to it one day.

  2. Amen to that Susan! You should see how he is lauding himself over his trip to Cambridge on a Fellowship.

  3. 1. Dreher is a coward and a bully (but we knew that). Here he intentionally uses a lightning-rod word and then changes it once the lightning hits (while taking a swipe at those who just didn't get the joke).

    2. One thing that Joe the Plumber and Whitaker Chambers have in common is that they were both right.

  4. Mea culpa! This whole thing has made me break my Lenten fast from blogs. LOL--I'm lovin' it. Now the rest of world sees what a jerk Dreher is.

Can Mark Shea's post lamely defending the Big D be far behind? :-)

  5. Dreher definitely let slip on the use of "Mongoloid right". i think he was feeling his oats because he got some grand (3 week) fellowship to Cambridge. (is it crunchy to ditch your wife and 3 little kids for a transatlantic lark usually reserved for grad student types? ah well, i'm sure the world will be significantly better off after dreher's toiling in the vineyards of alternative healing in the orthodox church. it worked for the archbishop and his missing teeth, right? oh wait...)

  6. over the years, confederacy of dunces has been a favorite book among the 20 year old set. enough said.

  7. What's the fellowship for? (I'm not up on my Dreherrhea; sorry.)

My DH received a post-doc fellowship from Dumbarton Oaks, to study Byzantine history in Athens for six months. He turned it down when he got a paying job instead. :) And we didn't even have kids then.

LOL, Kathleen. Here's the latest comment over at MCJ:

"Dreher’s a jerk - he jumped the shark when he went nuts for his “crunchy conservatism” thing and it’s all been downhill from there. I’m glad he’s not in my church anymore. Sorry Orthodox posters, but it’s true, and just wait a few more years, and you’ll be clenching your jaws and sighing with exasperation that he’s one of yours. Though the way he’s going, he’s very likely to find a reason to dump you, too, for some newer, shinier religion - one with fresher baguettes and tastier vegetables. It’s his way, after all. In his big announcement of conversion back in 2006, he blamed the Catholic Church for disappointing him, and went into raptures about how pretty his new church was. Why, they even had better food! It’s ironic that his ire was provoked by what he took to be a slur - “high-brow” - when he smirks that his readers can’t keep up with him because they don’t know the codewords he and his circle of friends use based on their special reading list. If that isn’t ‘elitist’, I don’t know what is."

Everybody is pointing out how Dreher has effectively proven Hanson's point. Ironic, but par for the course. This is going to follow Dreher... to the grave.

  9. the term "mongoloid conservative" -- i think that one is going to precede his name from here on out

  10. I guess he's still digesting that truffle pomme puree that will make him a better writer.

  11. More like it just makes him want to be a good writer. Right?

  12. iowahawk has a piece on the "highbrow" jihad against Rush, and takes a swipe at Dreher (in the voice of "T. Coddington Van Voorhees VII"):

Rod Dreher, whose sensational exegesis “Crunchy Cons” sold well over 200 copies last year, recommended a full embrace of the environmental movement, which as I understand is quite the rage among youthful voters and the trendsetting thespians of Hollywood.

    I recommend the whole piece.

  13. If you thought Dreher went far with his Mongoloid Right claim; Shea tops it with one that says Conservatism is Insane.

  14. Yeah, I read that about a week ago. Funny. Shea's like a crow; he doesn't recognize straw-men when he sees them. Or maybe he's a farmer since he's always using them. Either way, that whole piece is full of them.

  15. Just read the post Jonathan linked. You're right, Pauli...leave it to Shea to go ten rounds with a straw-man.

  16. where did these assholes come up with the meme "conservatives are people who spend with impunity"? all the people i know with 2 plus houses are liberal, as it happens -- and rabidly so. they also drive the biggest cars.

do these Rush-haters labor under the assumption that it's bad to take a private jet somewhere even if you make at least $20 million per year, as rush does? why is it not a problem when algore does the same?

i can't help but notice so much rush envy emanating from "conservative" males who make significantly less money.

  17. Read this post from Dreher where he complains how he is "Getting it from the base" while Mark Davis is receiving all of the love. I feel so broken up about what Dreher is going through. Job has nothing in terms of sufferring on Dreher.
