Norma, I don't get Twitter. It's funny; just last night I emailed Diane--the person who originally sent me this cartoon--complaining the same thing. "Nobody really gets twitter because it's inane." she said. That's the best summary of it I've heard. Obviously it has uses for communicating, but so does email, duh. Maybe another good succinct description would be "opt-in spam."
For me, twittering is easier than blogging, at least for now. My blog is pretty much on indefinite hiatus right now. Also, it seems I can keep up with current news easier by reading the short messages and links by people I'm following rather than trying to keep up with a bunch of blogs.
Another good thing about Twitter is it forces you to say more with less words. I've always admired people who could write with an economy of words. It's a talent that I lack, although I think I've improved somewhat over the years. I find Twitter is also a fun way to quickly share songs using twt.fm and blip.fm, although they don't have every song I want to share. You can add songs, but I haven't had time to look into that.
"It is not our part here to take thought only for a season, or for a few lives of Men, or for a passing age of the world. We should seek a final end of this menace, even if we do not hope to make one." — Gandalf the Wizard, The Fellowship of the Ring
I just don't get twitter.

So, that's my defense of Twitter. :-)
