The inability to answer a straight yes or no question is so, so sad. But eventually the hatred simply bubbles up and pops the cork.

    I have to admit, I see the hijab everywhere and it's beginning to really piss me off. It comes across as rubbing my face in a) the wearer's snotty disdain for my culture and religion and b) my own vulnerability in the face possible terrorist attacks with which the hijab wearer seems unduly anxious to signal agreement.

    it is far more common now than it was before 2001, is it not? or is it just me...

    It is not just you, Kathleen. We are embarrassed about problems in our religion; they are not embarrassed by the far worse problems in theirs. On the contrary, they seem to feel empowered by them.

    exactly. it's the vibe of *empowerment* that i get from these hijab types -- and their empowerment is gained via intimidation of me and everyone else they encounter.

    Little Miss Muslima is just dripping with venom and a sense of entitlement. I get the impression that she's an American convert. I think lot of the new hijab wearers are American converts.

    I have to admit, I see the hijab everywhere and it's beginning to really piss me off.

    The hijab does not bother me.

    That woman speaks accentless English and she's attending a selective state university. That strongly suggests the following:

    1. The total enrollment of the UC campuses, the private research universities, and the top-ranked private colleges in California is just north of 300,000. That suggests they're drawing their clientele from the top decile of California's high school graduates. Admission to one of these schools is a plum and it's a reasonable wager (though not a sure thing) that she's not a wage earner's child.

    2. It's also a reasonable wager she was either born in the United States or arrived here before age 12.

    Political militancy, to the point of advocating mass murder of Jews, is almost certainly not an organic outgrowth of her personal situation. It may be nourished by certain understandings of Islam, but it is not an inevitable corollary of same. It's all highly unnatural.

    We've had some discussion of the alt-right on other threads. You read their chatter and you ask yourself where did this mess come from (anti-semitism being modal though not universal therein). The answer would be that the problem is in the interiors of the speaking party.
