I love Exile. I guess Mick hated it and Keith liked it. I think it sounds different because the vocals aren't "out front" like in their more popular material.
Exile is refreshingly free of pretense. I've heard some people say that Let it loose is Mick's greatest vocal achievement. IMO, it's at least as good as Angie but hasn't been played to death on the radio.
Don't know about ranking Mick's work, but I'll sometimes just sample the first few seconds of each tune, just to hear Keef's fabulous opening licks (replaying the Tumbling Dice lick a few times). No one in the history of ever starts a RnR song better.
"It is not our part here to take thought only for a season, or for a few lives of Men, or for a passing age of the world. We should seek a final end of this menace, even if we do not hope to make one." — Gandalf the Wizard, The Fellowship of the Ring
The best thing about singing tunes from Exile on Main Street is that you can use any lyrics you like -- nobody will know whether you get them wrong.
ReplyDeleteP.S. To date myself, I saw the Stones live (in 1975) during this, their golden age.

ReplyDeleteI was having one of those days today that made me want to throw things (I might have let one go earlier -- I'm not telling).
ReplyDeleteThen I saw this post again, started listening to Exile, and was soon Happy again. Thanks.
