Andrew Sullivan calls Rod Dreher a coward

And Rod won’t do it because someone might say something mean at the office!

And of course he's right.

Sully, though, is a day late and a dollar short. Rod's own commenters already know he's a sniveling moral coward, as we already discussed previously here.

Somehow in his morally paralyzed state of terror Dreher also forgets that even if he gets pushback against his beliefs at the office, he's first in line for protection under EEOC laws, laws that make it clear who the party in the wrong actually is: the firm tolerating any such anti-Christian discrimination.

Not some vague Zeitgeist, you quaking, gibbering jellyfish.

So let's review:

  • Christ died on the Cross to bring Christianity

  • Numerous saints, Catholic, Orthodox and probably a whole bunch of others I'm ignorant of suffered torture and died professing and standing up for their faith.

  • Ordinary Christians across America, genuinely seated in their faith, also gladly shape their lives to profess and support that faith every day, although because in America we really don't allow torture and murder anymore, they take whatever occasional frownies or passed up opportunities for friendship they might get and shrug them off - like grown adults do

But pudgy little Rod Dreher of St. Francisville, LA, who struts around in life in a cloud of every hipster affectation of exotic religion he can think to muster (fashionably scraggly beard optionally included), who makes his living online acting out a Vegas-worthy performance art of religiosity that would make even Jimmy Swaggart weep, who somehow thinks life outside his Mam's belly should be a protected cozy corner, prepared for him by women and moderated like his blog, is too terrified of losing the gay audience for his blog and books he craves to even point out his own standing in a federally protected class, much less to actually ever have the spine to take any sort of direct moral stance against homosexuality on his TAC blog.

Man, oh, man, Mam and Paw Dreher, do I ever feel for you.

Your namesake Ray Dreher, Jr., only son and heir, is publicly whining and petulantly pleading why some vaguely referenced others should leave him alone to not have to be more of a stand-up Christian man than a depraved homosexual who likes to have butt sex with other men.

That's about as close to the incarnate definition of mangina as you can get.

  1. ugh. I wish I hadn't clicked on the link where in Rod is all cozied up in a corner with his candle and tea while his wife is doing all the grunt work.

    Blech!!

    1. TTC, you and I both. Did you see Terrence Mattingly's comment? Double-blech.

And you don't have to be an atheist to agree with that Naomi Cunningham person in the combox. Did you notice how Rod responded to her with a middle-school-level insult? Only sycophants are tolerated at the Rod-Blog. Pathetic.

  2. I truly feel sorry for his wife, who must truly be a saint. I mean not only does she handle the housework, the education of the children, and more than likely most of his scheduling travel arrangements. She must also be ready to rip up her home, leave her friends, and destabilize her family all for the whim of the Working Boy when he decides to high off on a cross-country employment run.

    1. Not to mention that she has to read Dreher's over-sharing about saying "I love you" to another woman, and about his sex-crazed life back in the day.

    2. I only mention this because Rod, in fact, made a public point of it in a conversation with Andrew Sullivan. They do not, according to him, practice any form of birth control.

Now how many children do they have?

    3. Well, I don't know what he and his wife do now. They has 3 kids. He's talked about changing his mind on that once, and the insinuation is that since he left the Catholic Church he and his wife have changed their practice.

My wife and I don't practice artificial contraception. We currently have 6 boys. We are breeding an army of patriarchal Christianists to restore white power in the hemisphere. Please don't breathe a word of this to anyone.

  3. It has to be disconcerting for her to have a husband as obsessed as Dreher is with homosexuality, and one who chats with gay men on the internet all day like Dreher does.

  4. I think Dreher is a preening oportunist who seems to fit right at home in this video by Weird Al Yankovic.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dU95v23MQ4c

  5. Well, the Plato of St. Francisville demonstrated his time-traveling ability today. When caught on it he said:

"As a reader points out in the comboxes, this story is two years old. Argh! It’s all over the Internet now as a new story. I have got to learn to check the dates on these things."

This comes from someone who has a degree in journalism and is being paid to write relevant, current social commentary. I wonder what he has on the folks at TAC to still have a job there after all his time-twisting foolishness.

  6. Props to you, Keith, for tagging Dreher as a coward long before I came to that conclusion. You had it right.

Is there seriously anyone left who thinks Rod's wish to be invited to the right confabs back on the coast or to keep Andy as a friend is the real reason for this? Doesn't Occam's Butterknife suggest a far simpler answer?

  9. Sarah Palin agrees with Andrew Sullivan: Dreher is wrong. A strong visible defense of traditional values can prevail over the thought police.

    1. And, cats and dogs living together, Sullivan agrees with Sarah Palin.

Like I said, when Andrew Sullivan starts sounding like more of a manly Christian than you do, it's time for the food show on Bravo, or that wallpaper showroom you've always dreamed of but never told anyone about. Anything but playing the goggie on the floor with your tummy in the air.

  10. As of this evening Dreher and Sullivan are back cat-fighting again. Someone will be sleeping on the sofa tonight. Whom it is I'm afraid to know.

  12. Rod baffels me. We went to a boarding high school together in Natchitoches Lousianana and were good friends for many years later — I think until he came out for George W. Bush.

He was one of the first guys I came out to and he was very supportive. We used to go to my parents’ French Quarter apartment and stay up all night long at the gay bars, and then do it again. Hell, he went with me during Mardi Gras to gay bars, and you know what goes on then, and he never batted an eye.

When I told him, as a teenager, that I wanted to get married to a man and have kids, he was very, very supportive. Now he writes as if homosexuality suddenly *shocks* him.

    1. Oh don't know why that shows up as unknown. Not trying to be anonymous: for the record my name is Harrison Brace

    2. Hi, Harrison. My husband taught at the Louisiana School while you and Rod were students there. Hubby and I even chaperoned y'all's proms. ;) My husband's name is Steve Kamer, and he taught World History, History of Philosophy, Latin, and Greek. Does that ring a bell?

This isn't a proposof anything...just auld lang syne. Your name sounds familiar, but I'm not sure whether you were in any of Steve's classes. I'm pretty sure Rod wasn't in Steve's classes. I really don't remember him from LA School at all, to tell you the truth. Steve had some stellar students -- Jon Freeman, Marc Cohen, Angela Petite, Janice Pang -- but Rod wasn't one of them.

  13. Hi! Yes, in fact, I do remember your husband. I was crazy enough my first year to sign up for 3 languages, calc, chemistry, english, drama -- and probably some other things. I also signed up for world history but something had to give, and it ended up being world history.

I ended up going on to start a PhD at Stanford in comparative literature, but left ABD and went to work in software development.

Always great to hear from people -- well I suppose in this case people I may have known or almost knew. Feel free to friend me on facebook: https://www.facebook.com/harrison.brace

Janice Pang was one of my best friends. We both came from Lafayette High. I went to Columbia, then she went there, then I went to Stanford, then she went there. Total coincidence though :-). Well mostly.
