Watch Out, Conservatives

I heard Mike Gallagher reading this London Daily Mail piece about the Barack Obama expensive ring gift to his wife and I thought, "That sounds fake." And I was right.

Just like the fake caviar story and the not-born-in-the-USA story, these things are always counter-productive and often meaningless. The guy won the election -- focus on what the guy says and does. I'm all for people saying what they think about his cabinet appointments, for example. I think it worth pointing out that he could be doing more for the economy by explaining, finally, exactly what he intends to do with regard to taxes and the economy, and suggesting that he might want the economy to get a little worse before inauguration day is plausible. But, come on, people, don't go the way of anger and pusillanimity, lest we rightly be accused of Obama-derangement. We're smarter and bigger than that.

  1. why would that not be true? they're just embarrassed it got out in this financial climate. the statement from the jeweler is a complete CYA.

  2. Now AP is claiming it's fake also. But if it is real, what does it really matter? that's my point.

  3. It's an ugly ring anyway no matter how expensive. If you're gonna spend that much money, use it to buy a ring like this instead.

I admit I fell for the story, just like I did the with the false story about Michelle Obama ordering a "snack" of lobster, caviar and champagne. I guess the reason why some of us are inclined to believe these stories is because of the "champagne socialist" type hypocrisy that we are pretty sure the Obamas are guilty of.

  4. AP is a joke now.

if it's real, it matters, b/c it speaks to MO's stunning sense of entitlement which has been exhibited on other occasions

  5. There are mixed reports at this point. Some people say that he was going to do it until he whiffed fumes from the reaction, so he nixed it.

My point is that it's a little too perfect, just like the Iranian caviar story. Remember Michelle scolding Americans in advance saying we'd buy bling-bling with our middle-class welfare stimulus checks? And... I can't find this link now, but there was a big reaction from someone about how this is a slap in the face at Africa by supporting the DeBeers empire. DeBeers was founded by Cecil Rhodes, who is associated in the piece with the metal Rhodium, albeit mistakenly. This is all very oblique and hard to sell to me, but again, like I said, it just seems too good to paint Obama as a hypocrite.

The other irony is the idea that this is a gift to MO for being "such a good sport". She was having a blast during the campaign, esp. before she was gagged. If anything, it would be an apology for the duct tape she was made to wear on her mouth for the 2nd part of the campaign. And I agree with Susan, the ring is ugly. It looks like a man's ring to me, at best.

  6. it's a little too perfect because, as has been demonstrated and will be demonstrated on countless occasions, they lack all but the most superficial self-awareness. that's why MO can go to the fanciest schools that will take her but counsel others they shouldn't even try but should just get jobs in their local communities. that's why MO can bitch about her student loans until the bookdeal that was clearly too long in coming for her liking. that's why she has no compunction about preaching to others about ethics and morals but happily accepts a tripling of her salary when her husband is elected senator. i could go on
