This looks pretty cool

Take it from a Skype junkie. I'm putting off buying an iPhone, but I'm starting to feel like resistance is truly futile.

Here's the slideshow and review of their iPhone app.

Skype continues to extend its smartphone mobile platform reach with the latest iteration for the Apple iPhone. Skype for iPhone users can conduct chats, control presence and edit profile information, as well as place Skype-to-Skype and SkypeOut calls. However, calls can be placed only when connected via Wi-Fi; EDGE or 3G users have to settle just for chat and presence.

Skype might be to phone companies what Google was to Microsoft. Who knows, but their app is simply too slick. The iPhone is slick, too.

  3. While the iPhone is superior to my Treo 680 simply by virtue of it being newer, I’ve been using a PDA phone now for over 4 years. So I don’t feel too "stupid". My first Treo 650 I shelled out $500+ for–I thought it was cheap because the PC Phones with similar chops were going for $800+ and running a slow buggy version of Windows CE. So I’ve had the camera, internet access, email, etc.–I can stream audio, play MP3s, use a blue tooth headset–no GPS though. I’ve been using the Palm platform since my first PalmPilot circa 1994. Clearly the weakness at this point is the lack of new, good, up-to-date software apps for PalmOS – sadly it’s becoming the Apple Newton of development platforms. Or probably worse.... Maybe the Atari ST?? (shivers) while Apple's iPhone is ironically becoming the new PC of smart-phones for sheer volume of apps while retaining the Mac UI sexiness.

The thing that is turning my head is that some geeks I know who are very attached to their own platforms are starting to advise going to the iPhone. I've gotten really used to my "hard" keyboard though. So I still need to be persuaded.

But don't worry; I'm fading fast here....

Here's a question: is there a good call filter app for the iPhone -- I'm guessing there is. This would allow setting certain calls to go straight to voicemail, i.e., no caller-id or certain annoying people. Also you could set certain hours for this to be on or off.... just checked and looks like there is something called MCleaner which does that.

  4. oh, well i never had a pda. i have no idea about the call screening type stuff, i'm not that much in demand. (here's what i do -- i dubbed someone annoying krazy, and then if the iphone says krazy is calling i don't pickup)

if you travel (which you seem to) the gps is pretty key. it's also a store locator so you can find the nearest whatever
