Tony Esolen On Mythical Candidates

Tony Esolen left an eloquent comment on Deal Hudson's defense of Archbishop Dolan and Bill Donohue which speaks perfectly for nearly all of us informed practicing Catholics. There is really only one choice in any given political race, and that is whether to vote for a Republican or not to vote at all. The comment is about halfway down the page; here's an excerpt:

They are allergic to the full and vibrant interplay of religious faith and public life; they are the ones who would sue, or who would look the other way while someone else sued, if a football coach -- horrors -- should join with his team before a game in prayer;

Want more? They do not believe that the family is PRIOR to the state, and has legitimate rights that the State must recognize; they do not, therefore, believe in free association (see the Boy Scouts again), the freedom upon which the Catholic principle of subsidiarity is based.

I'm a Catholic father and homeschooler, and I think I know my enemies.

But even if I am wrong about this, and I had a choice between voting for your two mythical candidates, I would apply my Principle of the Autobahn. Candidate A is worthless; Candidate B would build the Autobahn and fix the economy and make us all proud of ourselves again and round up innocent people to be incarcerated (and then gassed or starved or shot).

I vote for Candidate A, or I stay home. I will not vote for a Nazi. I will not vote for a pro-abortion candidate, period. That's not single-issue voting. It's a filter, or a block. If you served me a plate of French cuisine with excrement on it, well, I'd decline the honor of the meal; and it would not be single-entree dining, either. You give me two reasonable people with the moral sensibility of the average retriever, and then I'll have a genuine choice. Give me Al Smith and Herbert Hoover, and then I'll have things to think about.

Many people know that the "single-issue voter" accusation is a canard, but Mr. Esolen succinctly explains why the behavior unfairly labeled thus is actually more thoughtful than the "enlightened" liberal approach.

Another thought: I agree partially with those who cast blame at the Republican Party for not doing more when in power to fight legalized abortion. But I can't agree fully, mainly due to one thing: money. When a woman decides to abort, the revenue generated from the procedure lubricates the lobbying gears and helps fund the Democrat machine. If the same woman decides not to, the Republicans make $0. The deck is stacked.

People's Cube Reports: Obama's War Is a Quagmire

His war on FOX News, that is. Too funny.

Despite the President's promise of a swift and decisive victory, Obama's War on Fox News has developed all signs of an unwinnable quagmire, making the White House even more isolated in its unilateral attempts to crush the growing media insurgency. As the war continues to grind on for a second month, public opinion is shifting towards a quick and complete withdrawal. While many observers still agree that the "War on Limbaugh" is a "just and necessary war," even the former supporters of the war effort are now labeling the War on Fox an "unnecessary war of choice" and claim that the cable channel had nothing to do with Obama's falling approval numbers.

I also have to include this bit on Dan Rather:

The war is also personal for the aging media veteran Dan Rather, who had won many media battles but one single failure brought him a dishonorable discharge. As a result he is now suffering from Post-Traumatic-Stress Disorder (PTSD), has become homeless, and lives somewhere under the Manhattan Bridge. "This war has put a lot of wear and tear on liberal commentators," Rather observes. "Their families are being broken up because they come back home with PTSD, STD, PMS, with drug and alcohol addictions, and afflicted by severe violent and suicidal tendencies."

Three Cheers for the Media!

I'm serious. This is such an amazing story. And it's a big loss for the Obama administration.

Hat tip to Moe Lane at Redstate. Lane also mentions that Hot Air is covering it; there are tons of links there. The other networks must be embarrassed since they are still carrying water for Dear Leader, so it has only been mentioned on FOX so far (per Lane yesterday.)

I hope we can lay to rest the looney tune idea from the Alex Jonesians et al that FOX news is "just like the others." If so, why do they specifically get singled out by the Obama Administration?

I think ACORN has got to be scared. It's getting like a poker game at this point. Who's going to fold first? Breitbart is not breaking a sweat. Loved the point about the idiots saying "FOX News is behind this." Then: "So... why aren't they suing FOX news??" These criminals are getting sloppy. Naturally, they haven't had to be careful up until now. They are going to screw up.

Palin is a bigger ratings magnet now than before she resigned. Look at the various political websites. Whether it is to ridicule, revile, or admire her, no major outlet is without its attempted coverage of her.

She has successfully banned the main stream media from her events and pushes past them with tweets, Twitter and Facebook entries. Who can forget the “death panel” phrase that knee-capped the current health care bills? Talk about a reduced carbon footprint.
