Weigel on the "Ripken Ethic"

It's about baseball, not Church teaching, but that doesn't mean George Weigel's latest article doesn't qualify as some of the Best Catholic Writing 2007.

  1. I like Weigel a lot, but there's something a little cranky (not that there's anything wrong with being cranky) here:

How many times have you seen a bunt properly laid down in recent years? Or a hit-and-run smoothly executed? How often have you watched a multi-million-dollar-per-year player forget how many outs there were in the inning? Or fail to run out a ground ball?

    The answers are:
    1) Lots of times
    2) Lots of times (I am a Mets fan, so I am used to competence, at least in the past two years)
    3) Twice
    4) Often, though I also see guys like Reyes hustle almost all the time.

I know where he's coming from, but I don't think this generation is quite as awful as he lets on.

  2. Yes, the steroid use is way down (as is the musculature of players I won’t mention).

Yeah, but the head of one of those unnamed players, who just recently became the all time home run king, is still as big as a beach ball.
