The genius of Bonham is a little bit veiled on this song, live or not. He's playing an open hi-hat which gives it that continuous rattling drone. It's a testament to Plant's vocals that he sings right through it.
Bonham is great; 2 showcase tracks which come to mind are "The Crunge" from Houses of the Holy and "The Rover" from Physical Grafitti, my favorite Zep album.
It should be noted that Page was an incredible studio producer as well and a master at layering guitars without making the result sound over-produced. I noticed the conservative clothing immediately; I thought, hey, that's how I dress to go to work!
Jimmy Page is okay; however, I think Pete Townsend has kept more of his quality over the years. The only drawback of course is his playing has made him partially deaf.
"It is not our part here to take thought only for a season, or for a few lives of Men, or for a passing age of the world. We should seek a final end of this menace, even if we do not hope to make one." — Gandalf the Wizard, The Fellowship of the Ring
jimmy page never really dressed the part did he? he looks like a mormon usher there.
ReplyDeletei have always maintained that the true genius of led zeppelin was bonham; it's harder to tell that live.
