Yeah, I'm not a big fan of The Band, but they were great behind Dylan. Robbie Robertson is seriously annoying, e.g., the interviews explaining how they didn't want to have a name but the record company made them. Pomposity disguised as humility at it's worst.
In defense of the Doors and Floyd I'll just say that both David Gilmour and Ray Manzarek were serious musicians/engineers who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to give the bands their unique sounds while Roger Waters was being mister political and Jim Morrison was trying to be... whatever it was he was supposed to be.
"It is not our part here to take thought only for a season, or for a few lives of Men, or for a passing age of the world. We should seek a final end of this menace, even if we do not hope to make one." — Gandalf the Wizard, The Fellowship of the Ring
This was a good use of The Band. Which, IMO, is about the most over-rated band in history (including The Doors and Pink Floyd, which is saying lots).

ReplyDeleteMy list of the over-rated left out the following old chestnut:
ReplyDeleteQ: What did the Deadhead at a Grateful Dead concert say when he ran out of weed?
A: "Man, this music sucks."
