Best commentary I've found on Obama's SOTU speech

Troy Senik is a speech writer who formerly wrote for G. W. Bush, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Newt Gingrich. And his dissection of Obama's State of the Union Speech is so choice that I'm not going to excerpt any of it here, you have to read the whole thing. But I will say I especially loved the part about "the President’s attempt to transfer the totemic appeal of some working-class hero to himself by placing him or her in the House gallery."

F

You have to read the British press to get anything resembling common sense about Obama. In this scathing take-down, Toby Harndon gives the big guy a failing grade in counter-terrorism.

In his studied desire to be the unBush by responding coolly to events like this, Obama is dangerously close to failing as a leader. Yes, it is good not to shoot from the hip and make broad assertions without the facts. But Obama took three days before speaking to the American people, emerging on Monday in between golf and tennis games in Hawaii to deliver a rather tepid address that significantly underplayed what happened. He described Abdulmutallab as an “isolated extremist” who “allegedly tried to ignite an explosive device on his body” – phrases that indicate a legalistic, downplaying approach that alarms rather than reassures. Today’s words showed a lot more fire and desire to get on top of things – we’ll see whether Obama follows through with action. In the meantime, he went snorkelling.

Can you imagine the rage which would have been directed at Bush if he was goofing around while everyone was reeling from this wiener bomber's failed terrorism attempt, which wasn't stopped by the "system", but by passengers plus a bad case of projectile dysfunction?

I'm especially disappointed with Jan Nepalitano. I figured any chick that butch would be a little tougher at getting these guys, especially dudes obsessed with their phalli. It just goes to show you the danger of gay stereotypes.

Deeds not exuding confidence

I laughed at the very last line of this article where Creigh Deeds, Democrat candidate for Virginia Governor, states "I don't think they're throwing me under the bus," they being the Obama Administration. That's not the best rhetoric to inspire confidence in the undecided voter, dude. I'm guessing the Creigh-ster is busy packing the ol' parachute.

Obama's Olympic Loss: Big Deal Or Not?

The media and the administration are trying to spin this major Olympics fail, and the more they dig the "not a big deal" hole, the more laugh-worthy they become. Here's Jeremy Haddock in American Thinker with some brilliant points:

But, unbelievably, it turned out that 2016 was not in the bag! Obama set off on a "take no prisoners" campaign with nothing more than his unexampled hubris, apparently believing that his persona and magnificence would win over a few starstruck IOC cheerleaders. Obama gambled the prestige of the United States on an opportunity to enhance his personal glory if he won. He lost. He can pretend that it is nothing, but unfortunately it is not nothing. Michelle is furious, and for once, I agree with her.

Only the Olympics? Obama does not have the connections, force of will, rhetoric or naked power to browbeat even the Olympic Committee, nor the intelligence capability to uncover its intentions. Now he has to face the Iranians and North Koreans, and the Grand Master, Putin, without getting his lunch money stolen. This is why this mis-step is such a disaster.

World leaders now know, with certainty, that Obama is satisfied to conduct affairs of state by the seat of his pants. He is looking only to cover himself in glory, for which he is willing to expose the prestige of the United States to hooting derision. This is a telegraphed weakness that foreign ministries around the world will carefully study. Now that Obama has, in such a short time, already provided an extensive catalog of bad judgment, weakness, and willingness to abandon allies, he will be tested far, far beyond that which a strong leader and confident nation would be expected to endure.

Michael Medved pointed out that it probably cost $1,000,000.00 worth of taxpayer money to fly Dear Leader over to Denmark—that's personally why I can't swallow the "no big deal" argument.

And of course, here's the formidable insight of George Will on the narcissistic quality of the Obamas' speeches, which everyone noticed save those still blinded by what will calls the "sunshine of Obama's charm":

Vain. Yes, let's use a word everyone can understand. Mmm, mmmm, mmmmm!

Chris Johnson: Male Kathleen Parker collapses on his fainting couch

Hey, don't mock the furniture, Mr. Midwest Conservative. That fainting couch was handmade and has been sitting in the family bungalow for years!

Too good...

Why do I think the millions who marched on Saturday are on to something important? When the male Kathleen Parker collapses on his fainting couch.

I wonder if Chris Johnson will be called un-Christian for this "vicious assault" on a fellow Christian? Not that I want him to receive the treatment with which I was graced... just wondering.

Funny how Rod hedges his bets by adding an update where he links to Matt Welch's common assessment that, hey, these people aren't that bad in the main... a few expected kooks... etc, etc. And Welch flatly condemns "geek" and "nut" standard caricatures of the Tea Party protestors by the news outlets, something we don't expect Rod to ever do.

Justified in nitpicking

Sometimes I almost feel horrible when my 6-year old is excitedly telling me a story and I have to correct his English usage. And for him this usually means reminding him to stop peppering his speech with the word "like" unnecessarily.

But now that the Palin family has made the terrible mistake of allowing Bristol Palin to give an interview, I feel entirely justified at nipping this habit in the bud. "Like, like, like...." Cheese, Louise. Just for the record, I feel it is entirely realistic to expect kids to abstain from this habit.

BTW, we went to Bristol, Maine last summer and it was gorgeous.
