Jonah Goldberg on "McPalin"

Heh.

Obama's idea of ethics reform is to mandate clean sheets in the brothel. Palin's is to tear it down.

And Jonah came up with my favorite phrase to date which sums up Joe Biden, "limitless gasbaggery":

And let's not forget Biden, whose gaffes are the unavoidable byproduct of his limitless gasbaggery. Biden could shout on "Meet the Press," "Get these squirrels off of me!" and the collective response would be, "There goes Joe again." But if Palin flubs the name of the deputy agriculture minister of Kyrgyzstan, the media will blow their whistles saying she's unprepared for the job.

McCain Contra Mundum?

Regarding this, uhhh... "artwork": what I want to know is...

What in the heck is Mother Earth doing wearing a bowler hat? What, she thinks she's Charlie Chaplin or somethin'?

At first I felt bad for poor old Ma Earth, she has no arms. Then I thought, "Oh, well, neither does Venus."

Mars, on the other hand, doesn't seem to be missing anything. But thank God for that bed sheet, I should say.

Good and Perfect

Thanks, Tom, for letting me air my opinion on your fine weblog.

I have no problem with someone who decides that they can't in good conscience vote for either candidate for President. But sometimes I feel as if certain people in the SCCB believe that you can't be a faithful Catholic unless you refrain from voting for anyone less than perfect.

Up, Up and Away in Ravenna, Ohio

There's a balloon launch in Ravenna each year as part of their big town festival celebrating the toy balloon industry. Here's the web site. We went last year to the launch at it was a blast. We'll be going again this year and I highly recommend it for the whole family.

Here's some footage from the 2006 launch.

I recognized some of these bad boys from last year's launch. I noticed that they didn't have steering wheels though — what's up with that?

I guess "thanks" really is a "magic word"

Like all good, obnoxious parents, I routinely tell my kids that "please" and "thank you" are magic words. But sometimes I forget that I'm not really distorting the truth too much when I say that. Sometimes they are as close to magic as we get in our "muggle world".

For example, check out Tammy Bruce's comments on Sarah Palin's appreciative remarks toward Geraldine Ferraro:

On the day McCain announced her selection as his running mate, Palin thanked Clinton and Ferraro for blazing her trail. A day later, Ferraro noted her shock at Palin's comment. You see, none of her peers, no one, had ever publicly thanked her in the 24 years since her historic run for the White House. Ferraro has since refused to divulge for whom she's voting. Many more now are realizing that it does indeed take a woman - who happens to be a Republican named Sarah Palin.

Bruce, a gun-owning pro-choice Lesbian who voted for Reagan and fills in on Laura Ingraham's show is probably voting for McCain anyway. But it looks like for Ferraro the magic words sealed the deal. I guess she's not divulging who she's voting for so she doesn't wake up with a bloody horse head in her bed.

"Somewhere Between the Soul and Soft Machine"

I loved this tune. I wasn't Catholic when it came out; I just thought that Kyrie Eleison was one of J. S. Bach's famous works that everyone else ripped off.

"Where have ya beens and faraway frowns"

This was playing in the grocery store yesterday. It simultaneously made me feel young and old, which created a kind of strange "middle-aged" feeling.

Spiritual Adoption of an Unborn Child

In order to help end abortion, each concerned person should consider spiritually adopting an unborn child. See the Spiritual Adoption site for details and materials.

Basically you say a prayer that goes like this:

Jesus, Mary and Joseph, I love you very much. I beg you to spare the life of the unborn baby whom I have spiritually adopted who is in danger of abortion.

If you're not Catholic you can leave out Mary and Joseph. But don't be surprised if you get to Heaven and find out they were eavesdropping on your prayers all along. I'm sure that Blessed Mother Teresa is heading up at least one of the groups doing the adoption filings, so feel to drop it in her inbox. Or, of course, St. Anthony who knows everybody up there and who's in on just about everything.

Archbishop Sheen was the one who started this practice. His idea was to pray the prayer each day for a year. I've been saying it every night for almost 14 years since Ash Wednesday of 1995. So potentially I have 13 adopted kids and one on the day whom I don't even know. And the oldest one is already a teenager! Yep, they sure grow up fast.
