Speaking of Boston...

The Boondock Saints: required viewing for Saint Patrick's day or thereabouts. Catholic? Well, not really... but sort of. And as tribal as it gets.

It is Rated-R and definitely not for the kiddos. Or if you have an adversion to violence.

  2. i confess i did not see this one (after watching "Overnight" there was no way). but i'm skeptical of cinematic homage to gritty irish thugs, cf sean penn's (oscar-nominated if i recall correctly) imitation of our man Bono in mystic river (but kevin bacon in that movie was great, and (perhaps not coincidentally) the only one in that movie who didn't act as if he had shamrocks tatooed all over his backside)

  3. No, not yet. I heard about it, however. I was introduced to Boondock Saints about 2 years ago by my bro-in-law. I read on the web around that time about how Duffy basically blew his chance of ever doing a picture with Miramax ever again by being a grade-A prick. I remember thinking that it's probably good a sequel was never made; it would probably have sucked.

Did you see it, Kathleen? Was it funny? I confess I'm totally into docs of extremely damaged people like American Movie -- didn't like Friends Forever though, too gross and not enough footage of the guys doing their unique yet ridiculous parking lot rock act.

Oh, just saw your second comment. Well, none of the "thugs" in the film are Irish, just the good guys. Carlo Rota is great in it as the Italian Boss.

But there is quite a bit of "Shamrock tattooing posturing" in the film, if I know what you mean. All the performances are over the top & it's a total guys movie; it's not trying to be accurate to anything at all (even the "Mass" at the beginning has the homily after the Our Father). You'll probably lose all respect for my taste if you watch it. But I want Bubba to see it since he's into comic book-type stuff.

  4. Boondock Saints-- interesting movie, VERY un-PC, which is always good (in an early scene, the heroes, who are devout Irish Catholics, pick a fight with an angry butch lesbian feminist, setting the genereal tone), but not a GOOD movie really; rather cheesily done, in fact. More interesting in idea than execution.

Pauli, another movie about a "damaged" self-destructive almost-celebrity you might like: DIG. Look it up on imdb.com, or maybe netflix.

Mystic River-- sheesh, what an overrated movie! I don't get the acclaim that Eastwood is receiving as a director. All of his films are incredibly bleak, which isn't bad in itself, but they're also incredibly boring and pointless. It's as though by being bleak, he thinks he's being profound. He isn't. But he's fooled a lot of weak-minded people (including many critics) into thinking that he is.

  5. The movie is DiG, by the way. The capitalized G is what sets it apart from other features with the same name...

  6. Thanks, A. DiG looks very interesting. I was in an alternative-rock band for 6 years and inter-band squabbles are fascinating to behold. Like the meeting between Spinal Tap and the dude at the airport... I got to see that flick again.....
