It's very sad that people would hurt people in the hospital just to make Israel look bad. It is also sad that mainstream media does not cover this. Rush Limbaugh on the news media's contempt for conservatives

Here's the conclusion from Rush's excellent opinion piece in WSJ:

As I explained on my radio show, this spectacle is bigger than I am on several levels. There is a contempt in the news business, including the sportswriter community, for conservatives that reflects the blind hatred espoused by Messrs. Sharpton and Jackson. "Racism" is too often their sledgehammer. And it is being used to try to keep citizens who don't share the left's agenda from participating in the full array of opportunities this nation otherwise affords each of us. It was on display many years ago in an effort to smear Clarence Thomas with racist stereotypes and keep him off the Supreme Court. More recently, it was employed against patriotic citizens who attended town-hall meetings and tea-party protests.

These intimidation tactics are working and spreading, and they are a cancer on our society.

That last line is what scares me the most, because I do think these tactics seem to be working. The media and the left all feel empowered now that they have someone in the White House, empowered to attack those with different ideas.

Joe Wilson owns Obama: "You Lie"

First of all, the proponents of so-called health care reform have totally asked for this charge to be made by including the number of illegal immigrants in the number of uninsured they advertise. I've heard the number quoted anywhere between 46 million and 50 million, and regardless of what the exact number is, 12 or 13 million of these folks are here illegally.

Thank you, Joe Wilson. Sometimes two words are all you need. The calm reaction from the President is indicative of someone who knows he's lying. People show more passion when falsely accused of telling an untruth.

Someone tell Dan Rather that clairvoyance is not a "source"

The hat tip for this one goes to Roger H via this tweet. Get this: it turns out that not only did former President George W. Bush not dodge going to Vietnam, but he volunteered to go! However at that time he was 200 hours short on experience so he was not able to under the military regulations. Here's the pertinent excerpt:

Retired Col. Ed Morrisey, the man who swore Bush into the Guard, told CBS affiliate WVLT in Knoxville, Tenn., a different story. "The Air Force, in their ultimate wisdom, assembled a group of F-102s and took them to Southeast Asia. Bush volunteered to go. But he needed to have 500 (flight) hours, but he had just over 300 hours, so he wasn't able to go," Morrisey said.

Fact is, Bush enlisted as an airman basic in the 147th Fighter-Interceptor Group at Ellington Air Force Base in Houston on May 28, 1968 — when the 147th was participating in combat in Vietnam. From 1968 through 1970, pilots from the 147th participated in operation Palace Alert.

The F-102 Bush flew was designed primarily for defense against the threat of Soviet bombers, and units charged with this task were the best of the best. Only a return of his unit's mission to continental air defense before Bush completed his flight training made it unlikely he'd fly in combat. Bush avoided nothing.

The heart of the Mapes-Rather hatchet job was that Bush was a coward who avoided action in Vietnam. That was false, and CBS' own report on the matter shows that Mapes knew it was false.

Hey, maybe someone should tell Dan Rather! Forget it—that jerk knew.

It's a worthy question to ask of President Obama

In his latest press release, Bill Donohue of the Catholic League asks the question, "Is Obama lying? or just misinformed?"

President Obama went on BlogTalkRadio yesterday to address health care reform. At one point he told the left-wing religious audience, “You’ve heard that this is all going to mean government funding of abortion. Not true.”

Catholic League president Bill Donohue replied as follows:

On July 17, the House Committee on Ways and Means approved the America’s Health Choices Act (H.R. 3200). In the course of the debate, it considered the following amendment, sponsored by Rep. Eric Cantor:

No funds authorized under this Act (or an amendment made by this Act) may be used to pay for an abortion or to cover any part of the costs of any health plan that includes coverage of abortion, except in the case where a woman suffers from a physical disorder, physical injury, or physical illness that would, as certified by a physician, place the woman in danger of death unless an abortion is performed, including a life-endangering physical condition caused by or arising from the pregnancy itself, or unless the pregnancy is the result of an act of forcible rape or incest.

In other words, the amendment barred “government funding of abortion.” It failed: 19 voted for it and 22 voted against it.

Obama said yesterday that there is “a lot of misinformation” about this issue. So which is it? Was he lying when he said there would be no government funding of abortion? Or was he just misinformed? If it’s the latter, then someone needs to get him up to speed real fast. If it’s the former, then we have the makings of an ethical crisis in the White House.

Can we please get the number right?

From CNS News, "Once Again Obama Misstates Number of Uninsured Americans — This Time in a New York Times Op-Ed". Yes, but misstates equals overstates, naturally.

In fact, according to the latest available data from the U.S. Census Bureau, there are 35.920 million uninsured U.S. citizens and 9.737 million uninsured foreign nationals residing in the United States. Counting the uninsured foreign nationals, that makes a total of 45.657 million—or “nearly 46 million”-- uninsured people in the United States.

But you cannot say, as President Obama has, that there are “nearly 46 million Americans who don’t have health insurance coverage” or that “46 million of our fellow citizens have no coverage” unless you count 9.737 million foreign nationals as “Americans” and “fellow citizens.”

The breakdown of the almost 36 million who actually are American citizens is interesting as well. I heard that a large number of these people are eligible for Medicaid and most of the rest are people who have decided not to carry health coverage for whatever reason--cost most likely. So why not concentrate on these folks? Allow a wider diversity of low-cost plans for those who opt-out due to cost, and come up with some kind of auto-enrollment for those eligible for Medicaid? Because Obama wants to blow the current system up. That's the only sensible answer.

Clarity on Catholics United

Don't you love clarity? I do. That's why I love this take-down of the group Catholics United. Money quote: "Catholics United is a clearly partisan organization that heavily supports the Democratic Party." Then of course the evidence of this is provided:

Second, this specific organization – Catholics United – is a clearly partisan organization that heavily supports the Democratic Party. A glance on their website shows endorsements for President Obama, his selection of Kathleen Sebelius as director of Health and Human Services, and support for the University of Notre Dame in its decision to honor the president with an honorary doctorate at its commencement ceremony. While every Catholic has the right to join whatever political party they choose (cf. Compendium of Social Doctrine #573), a person does not have the right to equate their own personal opinion as the official position of the Catholic Church (cf. Compendium of Social Doctrine #574 ). The Church cannot endorse particular candidates for public office, nor can she align itself with one particular political party over another. The Gospel transcends the political order while at the same time intersecting with it along the way.

There is so much here in such a succinct form. Kudos to Jude Huntz for wielding our language like a sharpened blade. I like the next paragraph, too:

Finally, while there are some aspects of the economic recovery package in the budget that are in accord with Catholic social teaching, notably the preferential option for the poor and the concern for the common good, there are also troubling aspects of the stimulus package that do not reflect Catholic social teaching. While the Church acknowledges the rightful role of the state in the life of society and the economy, there is also a concern for the principle of subsidiarity that becomes threatened with excessive government intervention. What is more, there are family planning provisions within the stimulus package that promote abortion and contraception, which clearly violate the inviolable life and dignity of the human person, which is the foundation of all Catholic social teaching.

Damn subsidiarity! It's always getting in the way of the leftist claim that centralized social engineering equals Catholic social teaching, isn't it? Not to mention a little thing called abortion which kills people or artificial contraception which mechanizes people.

The conclusion is perfect; the whole piece is representative of the kind of clear thinking that led me to join the Catholic Church fifteen years plus eighteen days ago. Huntz's first two sentences in the concluding paragraph remind me of a quote from Pope Saint Gregory VII: "It is the custom of the Roman Church which I unworthily serve with the help of God, to tolerate some things, to turn a blind eye to some, following the spirit of discretion rather than the rigid letter of the law."
