Newsflash: Abortion isn't that popular

OK... obligatory language alert in the following post. Please mind that it is all warranted.

Perhaps this is the best illustration yet of what has been the characteristic failure to connect on the part of the Democrats this season. Mark Udall — who has been dubbed "Mark Uterus" due to his obsession with the female reproductive system — was heckled by his own millionaire donor:

Then, finally, came the only reference to policy in Udall’s speech. “And by the way, I’m proud to stand with Colorado’s women,” he said, almost as an aside. “I’m proud to stand for reproductive freedom.”

An angry voice from the crowd jeered: “That’s not the only thing you stand for! Jesus Christ!”

Udall turned to a short, dark man on his left. The senator look genuinely stunned. “I’m sorry?”

“That’s not the only thing you stand for!” The heckler was Leo Beserra, a 73-year-old who made millions on Wall Street and, since the early 1990s, has shared a generous slice of that wealth with Colorado Democrats.

Beserra’s grievance – that the senator’s narrow focus on abortion has backfired – is shared by others in the party, but rarely voiced in public and never in the middle of the candidate’s campaign speech.

Well good for Leo Baserra. He has been a big rich dupe for supporting Democrats; maybe he is beginning to realize that now. Later he vented again to the press:

Minutes after interrupting the senator’s speech, he vented, once again, to the Guardian. “I’m trying to figure out who in the hell decided this was how the campaign was supposed to go.”

He said he had just watched a Sunday morning talkshow in which Udall was ridiculed.

“Who is running the worst campaign? Him. Because fucking abortion is all he talks about. He should not talk about it any more whatsoever. There are so many other issues.”

Referring to the 2012 election strategy, Beserra added: “Two years ago it might have made sense. But didn’t they get an inkling that it wasn’t working [this year]?”

Yeah, Leo, well we've hated fucking abortion for a long time, and we're disgusted with people promoting it like Udall and literally taking advantage of the women who feel like they are forced into it by sick people selling the culture of death and reaping the benefits of the abortion cash machine. It's time to send this guy packing so he can go hang in the Nighthawks painting with Abortion Barbie and Abortion Ken.

This video is NSFW, but it is the perfect response to Udall.

What do you want? Abortion fucks up everything and everybody it touches.

More Pillution News

Remember the first pillution story I reported on? Here's the latest one, no doubt leaked to MSNBC by those horrible Catholics. And here I am clean out of animal drag queen jokes. But I suppose that the topic of prostate cancer is less humorous than the idea of a dance troupe of homosexual fish. Excerpt:

"Several studies now have found an association between estrogen exposure and prostate cancer," said study researcher Dr. David Margel, a uro-oncology fellow at the University of Toronto. In this case, he said, "We think this is environmental —[estrogen] goes into the water, into our food chain."

At the same time, Margel said, "We can't establish a cause-and-effect relationship. We definitely don't think the take-home message is women should stop taking the pill."

Yeah, why stop taking the pill over this, ladies? After all, you already increase your own chances of breast cancer, liver cancer and cervical cancer by taking birth-control pills.

But seriously, we've seen this knee-jerk disclaimer before from the Iain Murray piece as quoted in the first pillution story.

The cause of intersexuality among fish, scientists speculate, is pollution in the water, particularly hormones. Why don’t we have more outcries about hormones, and campaigns to save the fish populations? Why aren’t environmentalists lobbying on Capitol Hill to keep these chemicals from being dumped into our rivers?

Maybe because the source of these chemicals is not some corporate polluter, but something a little more dear to the Left: human birth-control pills, morning-after pills, and abortion pills.

The takeaway from these stories for me is this: although they are stating that hormones from oral contraceptives might not be causing prostate cancer they are not denying that there are female hormones are in our water supply.

One more related item. Happy Valentine's Day, and I hope all the married people reading this at least try to make a baby tomorrow. You have the power to change the future.

Caterwaulings

Bill Donohue provides an amazing digest of negative remarks about the appointment of Archbishop Timothy Dolan as head of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.

NPR is worried that Archbishop Dolan is "overtly conservative," and Tim Rutten of the Los Angeles Times is fretting about his "confrontational approach." Dissident Catholics are upset as well: New Ways Ministry says the vote "sends an ominous message"; Call to Action also sees his election as "ominous"; Sr. Maureen Fiedler says "we now have our very own Catholic version of the 'Tea Party' movement"; DignityUSA concludes that Dolan's election means the hierarchy is "out of step" with Catholics. Similarly, the Human Rights Campaign, a gay secular group, says the vote means the hierarchy is "out of step." Not to be outdone, the website of the Tucson Citizen accused Dolan of evincing an "arrogant" attitude in winning (it is true that he was caught smiling).

SNAP, the professional victims' group, opines that Dolan's "winning personality obscures his terrible track record on abuse." Marian Ronan of Religion Dispatches says his election is "not a good sign," and her colleague, Sarah Posner, concludes—and this really is ominous—that "the bishops are targeting families with loved ones who are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender." The Internet site Lez Get Real calls Dolan "the Vatican's spin-doctor," and the website of Time has a headline which reads, "More Bad News for Obama 2012: Catholics Elect Dolan." Edgeboston.com picked up the AP piece, but chose to give it a new headline: "Catholic Bishops' Vote to Mean Harder Church Stance Against Gay Families." And atheist Susan Jacoby is sweating over the fact that Dolan will be treated by the media "as if he is the voice of all American Catholics." She needs to get used to it.

I received an email from the pro-gay group "Catholics for Equality" which stated that the "Election of Archbishops Dolan and Kurtz Signals Increased Vatican Influence in US Politics". I don't know why I get their emails; maybe they bought my email address from the Daily Kos?

My first thought was something like "Yeah, because these people liked Cardinal George so much on their pet issues." I don't know if these gripes are worth a second thought.

But here's one anyway: a little bird told me the Episcopalians are having a membership drive.

A former LOST fan pans final episode as a "stunning act of creative cowardice"

Here's some really insightful and detailed commentary on what was wrong with the LOST finale. It's admittedly much better than my snarky take, which has been called immature, providing several contrasts with other films and stories and it doesn't run on for too long. The fact that the author, Doctor Zero (aka John Hayward), had been a fan in the early days is another benefit and his knowledge of key parts which represent serious internal inconsistencies show that his accusations of lies on the part of the show's creators are not merely lashings out. Example:

It’s not merely a question of riddles left unanswered. The show lied to its viewers, repeatedly. Remember Juliet saying “it worked” after the atomic bomb went off, followed by the last season’s opening shot of a submerged island in what appeared to be an alternate timeline? That wasn’t some sort of clever misdirection. It was an outright lie. The reason everyone immediately rewinds The Sixth Sense after seeing it for the first time is that it plays fair. It shows the audience certain things, with complete honesty, and the audience misinterprets what it’s seeing. It’s the difference between pulling a quarter out of someone’s ear with sleight of hand, versus knocking them unconscious and stuffing a coin in their earlobe. The kind of cheating indulged by the Lost writers will cost them their feet, if they ever run afoul of the madwoman from Misery.

The contrast with The Sixth Sense is perfect. It's the difference between skillful film-making and hoping people forgive you for your lack of skill. Here's the Doc's conclusion:

Too much of their collective story was left to our imaginations, and we aren’t the ones getting paid millions by ABC Television to write this stuff.

My thoughts exactly.

Summing up "Lost"

I'm not a Lost fan, but my wife is, so I asked her "What happened?" and she told me. I just listened with the emotion of a court stenographer, not even pretending to care about the idiotic characters left. (I'll never understand killing off Michelle Rodriguez so early. Why not give the axe to some unmemorable blonde? That was when I completely lost interest, but I digress....) I had a two followup questions for her, first off, what happened to Hurley? She told me that Hurley became the keeper of the island, or whatever. So... neat.

My second followup question was "What was the point?" I don't think she knew what the point was, except that she told me that everyone ends up in a church at the end--whether they had died or not--and they have a big group discussion to try to figure it all out. To me, that's almost perfect. For the perfect way to sum up the series, we must go to the Solomon of our times, the Great Jack Handey of "Deep Thoughts" fame:

I think a good novel would be where a bunch of men on a ship are looking for a whale. They look and look, but you know what? They never find him. And you know why they never find him? It doesn't say. The book leaves it up to you, the reader, to decide. Then, at the very end, there's a page you can lick and it tastes like Kool-Aid. (Source)

"There's a page you can lick and it tastes like Kool-Aid." That's what Lost means to me. If you disagree, then great! It's wonderful that we can all have our own points of view and the world is beautiful. Or ugly, whatever you're into.

It's really easy to start a story and really hard to end it. So my hat is off to the Lost creators: they made a lot of money selling advertising and aborted the thing before it got any sillier.

"Put your pride on the shelf"

Oh, boy, can't wait until 2014 when the Gay Games come to Cleveland.

Mayor Frank Jackson said the city "is prepared to roll out the welcome mat to the LGBT athletes, their families and spectators from around the world. Fans of the Gay Games will find that Cleveland is a great place to celebrate sports and culture and that we have tremendous assets and amenities for them to enjoy. The sports and cultural environment here is truly a uniquely Cleveland experience, one they will cherish for years to come."

Cleveland’s 2014 Gay Games IX Sports & Cultural Festival is set for Aug. 9 through Aug. 16, 2014. It will include 30 sports, four cultural events, opening and closing ceremonies and cultural events.

Maybe we'll leave for vacation during that week. If so I have to remember as we roll down I-80 to instruct my wife not to look in the rearview mirror lest she be turned into a pillar of salt.
