Last Minute Christmas Present Ideas

Here are some last-minute Christmas gift ideas. But please don't mistake these for good ideas, OK? Except maybe the second one, and you can get me two of them if you must. His and hers, you know.

First up is Ye Olde Plastic Potato Pellet Gun. It's my son's birthday today, and I got him one of these suckers. They really work, and the pellets don't hurt too bad. Just don't shoot you eye out, OK?

Also here's an idea if you want to buy me something. The 2016 Nissan Maxima has a sport setting to aid me in my midlife crisis. In case I have one.

Last but not least, here's something you can get from Five Below for that special someone who wants to appear smarter than they are. Or for nerd costumes.

I mean, $2 to look like the smartest guy you know? Can't beat that.

I actually agree with this

Every once in awhile, I agree with something posted over at the Caelum et Terra blog. Here's an example; well, mostly this little excerpt at the end (I have to admit that I skipped the part about farming in the middle.):

I can think of no stupider tool than the leaf blower.

It is loud. It is stinky. It consumes finite resources. It is not one whit faster than using a rake. The person wielding the blower does not get much in the way of exercise at all, and this in an age of concern over obesity.

And what is lost: the graceful sweep of the rake, the lovely sound of the leaves, like the sound of waves, the health benefits of the dance of raking, the conversation and camaraderie.

Sometimes technology makes sense, at least in terms of time and effort saved.

I posted awhile back the only really good use for leaf blowers.

A midlife crisis is a real bitch

And I'm sure people think I'm compensating when they see this 96-gallon beast in the driveway. But this Big Momma of G-cans will hold freaking everything from an entire week, and unlike our old little guys, it's got a hinged lid. So the raccoons' mouths can keep watering as they kick on down the lane.

The old lids went missing when we lived in Cleveland on winter. I hope the thieves enjoyed their sleds.

We're going to christen this beauty over the long weekend. Still not sure what to name her.

Crocs and Community

Reading articles by folks who overuse the word "community" always elicits the same response from me: "What a crock." So I had to snicker at this parody article about Crocs wearers from a disgustingly funny electronic rag named The Daily Rash. Excerpt:

“When I walked into our community center for the ‘Sustainable Alternatives to Mass Produced Organ Meats’ symposium and saw other people wearing their Crocs, I had to run to the restroom where I cried happy tears!” – Carol L. from Seattle, Washington.

“Crocs allow the average Joe to become a part of his community, without worrying that everybody else is better than him. I know that when others in my neighborhood began wearing Crocs, it was as if the dark cloud that had been hovering over me my entire life…evaporated! And when that bright, happy sun broke through, I saw for the very first time that there were others like me!” – Andrew S. from Carrboro, North Carolina.
